Upward Architecture collaborated with the owners of  a Mercer Island residence through this planned renovation that brought new life to both interior and exterior spaces. The project centered on a complete kitchen remodel, selective bathroom upgrades, and the addition of a large, covered patio designed for year-round family entertaining.

Inside, the design emphasized functionality and flexibility. The kitchen was reconfigured with new casework, a generous island, and bi-fold doors and windows to extend the cooking and dining experience directly onto the adjacent patio. Accent elements such as floating oak cubbies, concealed hood surrounds, and new stone fireplace carried a contemporary sensibility while harmonizing with refinished oak flooring throughout the home.

The proposed remodel extended beyond the kitchen to include a thoughtfully designed mudroom, pantry, and new casework details that improved everyday family organization. Interior finish palettes explored a range of directions—from dark charcoal with brass accents to softer tones of green and nickel—providing the owners with a suite of options for tailoring the space.

Outdoors, the existing patio was transformed into a functional extension of the living space with a new low-slope roof structure supported by exposed wood beams and integrated skylights. The design incorporated outdoor counter seating, skylight-framed natural light, and provisions for heating, making the space comfortable across seasons. Hardscape upgrades included stone planters, concrete pavers, and improved transitions to the yard.
