Located in the Fairmount Park neighborhood of West Seattle, this renovation study explored how strategic design moves could transform a modest home into one better suited for contemporary living. The project focused on reworking the kitchen and dining areas to create a stronger connection between the main living spaces and the property’s backyard.

Upward Architecture developed several layout options; each aimed at improving circulation and efficiency while opening the interiors to outdoor living. Concepts included reorienting the kitchen to maximize workspace and storage, integrating a central island for cooking and gathering, and reconfiguring the dining area for direct access to a new deck.

The study also examined how subtle shifts in materiality and light could unify the home’s interior character. Emphasis was placed on flow—ensuring that the kitchen, dining, and living spaces support both family life and entertaining while strengthening the home’s relationship to its site.

By testing multiple design approaches, the feasibility study provided the homeowners with a clear roadmap of possibilities. The result is a thoughtful framework for renovation that balances practicality, livability, and the potential for long-term value.
