Upward Architecture partnered with Community Health Care, a Tacoma-based provider, to renovate their recently acquired Key Health Center in rural Pierce County. Originally built in 1993 as a private physician’s clinic, the facility required substantial program updates to support CHC’s team-based model of care.

The design team reconfigured the building to include a new patient-facing pharmacy, modernized nursing and medical assistant stations, updated reception and waiting areas, and a secure pharmaceutical storage room converted from legacy paper chart archives. A new covered entry was added to accommodate emergency patient transport, along with a backup generator to increase resiliency during outages.

To deliver the project during the COVID-19 pandemic, Upward also provided project management services, including budgeting, bid solicitation, and contractor coordination. The renovation blends efficient healthcare workflows with an improved patient experience, ensuring the clinic can continue to serve its growing Key Peninsula community for years to come.

Mark and his team at Upward Architecture exceeded expectations on Community Health Care’s nonprofit health center tenant improvement project. Their ability to balance creativity with financial responsibility was key to the project's success.

Mark’s professionalism, patience, and extensive expertise were invaluable in guiding us from start to finish. His thoughtful and effective solutions to the space challenges we encountered made a significant difference. The team’s design seamlessly integrated the new and existing infrastructure, resulting in a beautiful and functional space that enhances our ability to provide exceptional patient care.
